Accessibilitat
- One of the specific objectives of the eEuropa 2002 Action Plan (Accessibility
of public web sites and their content) is to improve Internet access to
those with disabilities [1]. Senior citizens and those with disabilities
(physical, sensorial or cognitive) face diverse barriers when accessing
the Internet. Web accessibility means access to the Web by everyone, regardless
of disability; it is therefore not only important for those with disabilities,
but for everyone because it improves the access to the Internet in general.
Special importance is given to accessibility technologies such as,
“Health on-line”, “Administration on-line”
and “Education on-line”. It becomes necessary
to consider these tools when designing and creating websites
in order to facilitate access to contents and services offered
on the Internet.
Different initiatives like the Web Accessibility Initiative
(WAI) of the Consortium World Wide Web (W3C) in Europe [2],
or Section 508 Standard in the USA [3], have been working
on the elaboration of specific recommendations for the improvement
of web accessibility. These recommendations are and will progressively be applied
to the websites.
